The most recent (2011) U.S. Census data reveals that there are 98,292 people (1 out of every 5 residents) living in poverty in Northeast Tennessee (out of a general population of 507,691). Childhood poverty is even more prevalent: more than 1 in 4 children under age 18 (29,474 children) live in poverty in the region.
Each Spring, the Junior Leagues of the Tri-Cities (Bristol TN/VA, Johnson City, and Kingsport) partner with Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee and Food City locations throughout the region to collect food for these families in need. With the help of Junior League Members, Volunteers, and Citizens in our area, millions of pounds of food over the years have been collected and distributed to needy families in our area.
